Abstract

This research aims to analyze farmers’ strategies in achieving food self-sufficiency in Pangkajene and Islands Regency. A mixed-method approach was employed by combining quantitative surveys of 250 farmers across five districts with qualitative methods including in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis. Data analysis applied descriptive statistics, linear regression, ANOVA, thematic analysis, and SWOT framework. The findings reveal four major strategies: crop diversification (64%), utilization of simple agricultural technology (52%), strengthening of farmer group institutions (48%), and self-managed capital schemes (41%). Supporting factors include long farming experience, strong social solidarity, extension support, and institutional participation, while hindering factors involve low technological literacy, limited access to markets and credit, and climate uncertainty. Regression analysis indicated that technological literacy significantly influenced productivity (β = 0.42; p < 0.01). From the perspective of human resource management, farmers’ competencies, institutional strengthening, and motivation are the key determinants of success. The study recommends strengthening digital literacy, developing inclusive financing schemes, transforming extension services into technology-based training, and reinforcing cooperative markets to accelerate sustainable food self-sufficiency.
